Bouldering? What’s That?

Decorative image of female climbing

Bouldering is rock climbing stripped back to it's raw essentials. No ropes or harnesses (our staying safe guide), climbing only with shoes, chalk and mats.

The walls are high enough to be exciting (4.5m) but not so high that they're overwhelming.

Every climb (or "problem") is different. Your challenge is to use your balance, technique, strength and mind to solve it. Depending on your personal strengths and body shape your solution might be different to your mates.

And while you have fun you get the added bonus of staying fit! It’s a great way to trick yourself into doing a work out.

We welcome you to our community and hope you're ready to get hooked.

Climbing for everyone: explore our levels

At Boulder Heads, we have climbs for every skill level, marked by the colour of the holds. This makes indoor rock climbing accessible, whether you prefer an easy or challenging climb.

For your first visit, we recommend starting with the easier levels, usually the first 2 or 3. Even experienced climbers use these levels to warm up or cool down.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how it works:

  • Tags show where to start your climb.

  • Each problem uses holds of one colour, but you can use the gray volumes or wall at anytime.

  • To finish a climb, both hands must reach the last hold in a controlled manner.

  • The pink holds are down holds and are there to assist you to climb down safely. For a safe descent you can climb down on any colour.

Grading levels. Colours indicate easiest yellow, blue, purple, green, red, black and white the hardest. Orange is wild and could be any level. Pink can be used to climb down.
