Is bouldering safe?

Worried about your children’s safety? You’re not alone.

A lot of parents worry about the safety when they hear bouldering has no harnesses or ropes.
Compared to other climbing activities, indoor bouldering is one of the safest. Your chances of major injuries like breaking a bone, is low.

That being said, there are a some common, minor injuries. Awareness is the key to avoidance/prevention.

Most common injuries

Blisters

If you over climb and your hands aren't used to it you or your child will get blisters. Luckily kids are often used to monkey bars and have tougher hands than office workers. The key is to build up your hands resistance over time. We also have tape and chalk you can use in the gym.

Scrapes/bruises

Our wall and holds are rough, and if you scrape against them, you could take off some skin.

MINIMIsE your chances of injury

Any time you’re falling from a decent height, you risk landing wrong and injuring yourself. Most of the time, this isn’t anything major. A big shout out to our mats!!! I’ve been bouldering for about five years now, and the worst I’ve had is my breath knocked out of me when I land awkwardly.

Following some safety tips can reduce your risk of falling or injuring yourself:

Know your limits

The best way to avoid getting injured while climbing is to not push yourself too hard. Challenge yourself but know your limits.

Learn how to fall

Before climbing at our gym we will get you to show us a safe fall. See a demonstration in our safety video.

Warm up

Warming up improves your blood flow and loosens up your muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
